Ladies and Gentlemen, we have arrived at our next unit. As you can see from the title, we are going to spend the next week working with timelines. We will be reading, analyzing, creating, building and publishing our own timelines.
The state standard for this unit reads, "Events can be arranged in order of occurrence using the conventions of B.C. and A.D. or B.C.E. and C.E." We will be going a bit more in depth than just arranging events in order because that doesn't sound like all that much fun and...I said so!! By the time this week is over you will have mastered the following tasks:
Explain the purpose of a timeline
Explain and execute chronological order
Learn and identify the parts of a timeline.
Construct a timeline using proper spacing and intervals
Learn what all of the abbreviations mean and how to correctly apply them
Place events in the correct order on a timeline
Interpret the story that a timeline is telling
Let's get started!!!!
Task #1 Timelines: What are they?
I would like to know and see what you already think you know about timelines. You have been using them for a long time already. I would like for you to take a few minutes to reflect on what you know about timelines or ideas that you may have about them. You can jot your brainstorming ideas down on paper or start a list in a Google Doc if you would like. Think about what you have learned about in previous grades and what is your interpretation of the state standard?
When you are out of ideas, you are going to log in to your Stormboard account and brainstorm with your teammates. Many of the ideas will be the same so I would like for each of you to choose a different color sticky note. Each team member must have a minimum of five contributions on your team's Stormboard. (See rubric)
An example of my Stormboard can be found once you log in and use Storm ID 308625 and Storm Key accept52 or click on this link to view: What are timelines?
Task #2 Research and Construction
Task #2 of our timeline unit will involve you searching the web on a topic of your choice, and approved by the Legend, to make your own online timeline about. You may research a person, a product or anything that you can find 10 distinct dates on including the month and year of their occurrence. Remember to keep it appropriate for school and also keep your sources in mind, you may have to search a few websites to make sure the information you are looking at is correct.
We will be using Tiki-Toki for this assignment and yes, these will be presented to the class so please show some effort and do your best. Have fun with this and be as creative as possible.
I have made a Google Doc giving you step by step instructions how to log in and use Tiki-Toki. Click here. Be sure to check the rubric below as you will need 10 events minimum and each slide must have some type of media on there.
Also, check out my example of my favorite sport.... Hoops!
Task #3 Timeline of your life
For this assignment you may have to ask for help from an adult at home. You need to obtain 10 events that have been significant in your life with the months and years of which they occurred. With these events you are going to be making a comic strip of your life using Pixton. This is a really cool website that you will be able to make your own character and manipulate them in different poses and use different backgrounds to "illustrate" the event that has happened in your life.
I even made one!!! Check it out here to use as an example... My Life
Create an informative Google Slides about all of the "rules" that we have learned about timelines. Pretend that you are teaching someone else who has no ideas what timelines are. Please include a minimum of 5 slides (not counting your title page) and have fun with this assignment. Be creative with this and keep in mind that you want to "teach" someone else about timelines.
